BUFFALO HOSPITAL,  Buffalo, MN
DAAN

What is it?
A transformative initiative designed to help people of all ages make regular exercise, healthy eating, and reduced stress part of daily life. DAAN (pronounced dâ on) - a Native American word meaning to live a healthy, balanced life - offers hands-on elementary curriculum, adult wellness education, and a new fitness laboratory at Sister Kenny Sport & Physical Therapy Center of Buffalo Hospital which is located in a local gym to help participants take control of their health.  DAAN's professional support and resource services can be found in schools, work sites, and other places in the community. The program was also instrumental in the hospital winning the 2006 "Community Health Commitment Award" from the Minnesota Hospital Association.

Who is it for?
All members of the community.

Why do they do it?
The Centers for Disease Control report that, for the first time in 100 years, children's life expectancy is projected to decline due mainly to poor lifestyle choices around inactivity, nutrition, and weight management. Minnesotans are gaining weight at a faster pace than the rest of the nation with a 132 percent rise in obesity since 1990, while the nation rose 110 percent. In 2003, Buffalo Hospital identified several public health issues most in need of attention in Buffalo. Obesity and cardiovascular health ranked high on the list, both of which are health improvement focus areas for Allina Hospitals & Clinics, the parent health system of Buffalo Hospital.
