GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL MEDICAL CENTER, West Islip, NY
Good Samaritan Emergency Key Chain Tags

What is it?
Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center partners with Bay Shore/Brightwaters COMPASS, West Islip COMPASS, and West Babylon COMPASS (COMPASS stands for Community, Parents, Schools, and Students). Each COMPASS is a separate school-community coalition partnered with community and school leadership and the Suffolk Coalition to Prevent Alcohol and Drug Dependencies, Inc. One example of an action taken by these partnerships is the Emergency Hotline key chain tag, created by Good Samaritan and COMPASS. These tags, which are similar to those used by supermarkets, include the name and telephone numbers of local police, taxi service, crisis hotline, and response hotline, along with the COMPASS and Good Samaritan logos. The key chain tags have been distributed to local high school students.

Who is it for?
Community youth and their families.

Why do they do it?
The focus is to reduce substance abuse among youth and provide preventative programs. As a member of COMPASS, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center sponsored the creation and distribution of the emergency contact numbers key chain tags in support of the COMPASS mission statement to recognize family and youth as their most valuable resources, to help reduce substance use among youth, create a strong collaboration within the community, and cultivate healthy attitudes and behaviors.
