HODGEMAN COUNTY HEALTH CENTER, Jetmore, KS
Annual Women's Health Night
What is it?
Hodgeman County Health Center has sponsored a Women's Health Night each January for the last three years. It has been so successful, a decision has been made to make it an annual event now. A group of hospital employees volunteer to be on a planning committee for the event and start meeting at least six months before the next January event. At least 100 people have attended each of the first three annual Women's Health Nights.
Who is it for?
The program is planned around current health related issues for the women of Hodgeman County.
Why do they do it?
As part of the Hodgeman County Health Center strategic planning process, managers and employees of Hodgeman County Health Center decided there was a strong need to educate the local community on health-related issues. Women's issues were earmarked as the first goal. Men's health issues were also identified, but were put on hold for the time. A committee of interested individuals was put together and they began identifying several issues facing women in Hodgeman County. Over the past three years, several topics have been discussed at the annual women's health night including women's urinary incontinence, hormone replacement therapy, benefits of regular exercise, food nutrition, domestic violence and breast cancer awareness. Various health care professionals have been invited to speak on these subjects. In addition to the speakers, the women have played some fun games, and best of all, the night is topped off with food and treats that are only fit for a queen. While the women are eating and socializing, they have been treated to some fine entertainment as well. Also, everyone walked away with a goody-bag and several people won very nice door prizes. The women of Hodgeman County have not only thoroughly enjoyed this annual event, but now they expect it! We are happy to continue with this wonderful tradition.
