THE HOSPITAL OF CENTRAL CONNECTICUT, New Britain, CT
Mothers Offering Mothers Support (M.O.M.S.)

What is it?
Mothers Offering Mothers Support (M.O.M.S.) is a support group for young pregnant or parenting mothers, which offers a fun, relaxed atmosphere that allows mothers to learn from one another through discussion, activities, guest speakers, and field trips. M.O.M.S. groups are led by peer facilitators - women who were young mothers themselves and understand the fears and questions participants might have. In addition to various activities, the group offers information and tips on parenting strategies, child development, stress management, and health and nutrition.

Who is it for?
Pregnant or parenting mothers ages 21 or younger.

Why do they do it?
The community shows very high rates of pregnancies among teenagers and young adults, as well as a high incidence of low birth weight. Providing support systems is a key success factor in mitigating the adverse outcomes resulting from this reality. The program is centered on the belief that young mothers and mothers-to-be can support each other to be successful, learn needed skills, and make informed decisions.
