KING'S DAUGHTERS HOSPITAL, Temple, TX
Diabetes Drive-Thru
What is it?
For 11 years, King's Daughters Hospital has made diabetes screening about as simple as it can be. On a designated Saturday, usually in November during National Diabetes Awareness Month, people drive through the circular drive located at the front of the hospital where they register for the free screening, get their blood taken, receive an information packet and a snack, and drive away, having never left the comfort and privacy of their vehicle. Results are mailed to participants, and those with out-of-range glucose levels are contacted by the hospital's diabetes nurse educator and are connected with a physician for follow-up. Every year several are diagnosed as pre-diabetic and at least one participant is ultimately diagnosed with diabetes.
Who is it for?
Adults 18 and over who may be at risk for developing diabetes or pre-diabetes. Diabetics are also invited to participate.
Why do they do it?
More than five million Americans have diabetes and don't even know it, and nearly 200,000 Americans die each year from the disease. Since it takes just a few minutes to find out if a person is one of the 16 million Americans affected by diabetes, King's Daughters Hospital decided to make the screening process as easy as possible for members of its community.
