SUMMIT HEALTHCARE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER, Show Low, AZ
Navajo County CommUNITY Against Methamphetamine

What is it?
Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, formerly Navapache Regional Medical Center, started Navajo County CommUNITY Against Methamphetamine, a coalition for education and prevention to deal with methamphetamine abuse, which is made up of hospital staff, law enforcement (police and probation officers), mental health experts, school personnel, child protective service workers, and other members of the community. The focus thus far has been on general community awareness. There have been a series of town hall meetings across the county and in-service training for the local teachers. Local newspapers, radio, and television stations have given coverage to the problem of methamphetamine abuse. The coalition's next step is a curriculum to educate school children, beginning in the fifth grade. Grant funding has been obtained by the coalition to hire a coordinator to increase education and implement prevention campaigns.

Who is it for?
The entire community.

Why do they do it?
Navajo County is a large rural area with a serious methamphetamine problem. Meth-related ER visits, hospital stays, and substance-exposed newborns are not uncommon at SHRMC. The hospital is dedicated to the community and its overall wellness.
