Kids Fest Program
What is it?
Organized by the Bone & Joint Center at Straub, in collaboration with other Hawaii Pacific Health affiliates – Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi, and Straub Clinic & Hospital – Kids Fest is a free family event that promotes a healthy and active lifestyle, exercise and proper nutrition, prevention of injuries, and drug awareness. The 2008 event included 30 health-related booths, free food, free admission to Honolulu’s Bishop Museum, a drawing for bikes and helmets, and a chance to meet 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Bryan Clay. The exhibits/games encompassed nutrition, hydration, bone health, sun safety, asthma information, burn prevention/treatment, physical agility and balance challenge, the importance of hand washing, and tours of the Keiki Fire Safety House/Fire Truck and ambulance. Sponsors included the University of Hawaii and city, county, and state divisions for ocean safety, emergency medical services, transportation, and police.
Who is it for?
All families in the community.
Why do they do it?
A sports medicine physician and an orthopedic surgeon created Kids Fest because of their concern about childhood obesity and prevention of injuries, but also to encourage the entire family to attend and help parents understand the importance of being healthy role models for their children.
Impact: The fourth year of Kids Fest attracted more than 5,200 participants.
