Trauma Outreach Program

What is it?
Aultman Hospital's trauma staff has been working in the community for several years, mostly with area schools on various aspects of safety tips and injury prevention. For example, staff members take the national "Think First" program to area tenth-graders and discuss brain and spinal cord injuries resulting from risky behaviors, such as not wearing a seat belt, not using appropriate equipment when riding a bike or all-terrain vehicle, drug use when behind the wheel, and going at high rates of speed. A partnership with the North Canton Fire Department each November, called “Risk Watch,” allows Aultman to educate first-graders on choking, suffocation, and strangulation. Meanwhile, a fall prevention program provides senior citizens the education they need to stay safe in their own homes.

Organizations and individuals throughout the hospital’s five-county market.  

Why do they do it?
Aultman Health Foundation's mission is to “lead the community to improved health,” so this is one way the organization can promote and encourage community members of all ages to live safe, healthy lifestyles. 

Impact: In 2007, about 1,200 students participated in Think First, 35 Risk Watch classes were conducted at local elementary schools, and eight fall prevention seminars were held throughout the community. All programs were expanded for 2008.
