MEMORIAL HOSPITAL OF CARBON COUNTY – Rawlins, Wyoming
Diabetic Expo Program
What is it?
The Diabetic Self-Management Education Program of Memorial Hospital of Carbon County hosted its first Diabetes Expo November 10, 2007, in Rawlins. The Expo offered 23 educational and informational booths, allowing participants to learn about the latest products, services, and medications. Several speakers provided information about medications and hypoglycemia, the diabetic foot, retinopathy, and oral care. One physician spoke about metabolic syndrome and was available to answer questions. Live cooking demonstrations by Dining with Diabetes highlighted diabetes-friendly foods and promoted healthy eating. Free health screenings were available, including a foot screening offered by a podiatrist.
Who is it for?
Those living with diabetes, but also for those at high risk or interested in learning more about the disease and how to prevent it.
Why do they do it?
The mission of this event was to promote diabetes awareness by encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle.
Impact: Approximately 150 people attended the event. Five professional speakers offered valuable information about diabetes and the effects of this disease. The MHCC Diabetic Self-Management Education (DSME) Program was also the recipient of the Wyoming Department of Health, Aging Division OAA Title III-D Grant. This grant helped supplement the DSME program curriculum and provide services to seniors to promote mental and physical well-being “by assisting such individuals in delaying the onset of adverse health conditions resulting from poor health and sedentary behavior.”
