Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital– Lexington , Kentucky
The Brain Injury University Program
What is it?
Sponsored by Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital and the Brain Injury Association of Kentucky, the Brain Injury University is an educational series facilitated by health care professionals who specialize in the treatment of brain injury clients. Topics include: memory strategies, organization/time management, personal development, brain structure/function, emotional strategies, relationships, assistive technology, anger/stress management, peer support, sexuality, and medication management.
Who is it for?
Brain injury survivors, family members, and caregivers.
Why do they do it?
To enhance the quality of life for brain injury survivors, family members, and caregivers, and to facilitate the continuum of care for brain injury clients through increasing knowledge and helping to identify strategies that can meet the challenges that brain injury survivors face on a daily basis.
Impact: Over 30 brain injury survivors and their family members participate in the monthly Brain Injury University educational series each rotation. Survivors and their family members report the need for Brain Injury University secondary to the lack of community services available to this unique population once the rehabilitation continuum has been completed. The participants report increased life satisfaction, coping skills, and psycho-social adjustments based on the experience and topics covered.
