HELLEN KELLER HOSPITAL - Sheffield, Alabama
 Joint Camp

What is it?
Joint Camp is an educational program designed to reduce anxiety and to help patients make a smooth transition from the hospital to recovery, following a knee, hip, shoulder, or other orthopedic procedure.  Participants are led, step-by-step through details leading up to and following their surgery.  Participants receive a “Joint Camp” back pack with camp-friendly items, i.e., bottled water, snack, useful literature and material. The camp, which is two hours in length, is held quarterly, at no charge. Community Relations coordinates the camp which includes presentations by speakers from surgery and rehabilitation services. Questions are encouraged.

Who is it for?
Joint Camp is for any person anticipating, considering, or scheduled for an orthopedic procedure.  Family members are encouraged to attend so that they will be aware of what the patient is experiencing and will know what to expect.

Why do they do it?  Helen Keller Hospital saw a need to familiarize patients with the process and recovery, including the importance of the rehabilitation following an orthopedic surgical procedure.  This also allows the hospital to promote the quality of orthopedic procedures, including the rehab, available in our own community.
Program impact:  The hospital has reached approximately 100 people during the two camps already held. Individuals that attend Joint Camp are better prepared for orthopedic procedures.
