ROGER WILLIAMS MEDICAL CENTER - Providence, Rhode Island
Farmers Market

What is it?
Eating a balanced diet is one of the cornerstones of good health. Increased food and energy prices have, however, made it more difficult for consumers to purchase the right foods.  Shoppers often substitute less expensive prepackaged foods for more nutritional powerhouses like fresh fruits and vegetables that would be more costly.

Who is it for?
The Farmers Market was originally initiated for the convenience of employees and to promote healthy living among employees.  Patients, visitors and residents of the medical center’s community are also welcome to shop at the hospital’s farmers market.

Why do they do it?
A survey by the Rhode Island Department of Health revealed that only one out of four Rhode Islanders eats the five servings of fruits and vegetables recommended for better health. The hospital is hosting the farmers market to make healthy food choices more easily available. The organic Moosup River Farms in nearby Greene supplies the nutritious, in-season food bargains. The proprietors also provide shoppers with unique recipes for healthy meals that utilize the fruits and vegetables available that week.

Impact:
The farmers market that was available every other Wednesday from May through October, during 2008 was a huge success.  At least 50 percent of the medical center’s employees visited the market at least once, and 60 to 100 individuals visited the outdoor market each day that it was opened.
